A little take-along sewing box to hold the bare essentials. The design on the lid was inspired by these cute baby shoes:
Stitch Idées, vol.5
Since my space was circular, I added a few trees to fill the background and to make it more scenic. I also designed a companion piece:
A shepherdess pincushion. Though there's not much to her, it took a good amount of stitching and re-stitching to get her just right.
The original design was simple-- a girl in a homely smock dress with a head kerchief and a shepherd's crook. But when I started stitching her, I couldn't figure out how to distribute the colors and select the stitches. I knew she had to have some areas filled in order to have enough substance to coordinate with the exterior embroidery; still, I didn't want her to become too bulky. Her dress was the most difficult part-- should it be just outlined, partially filled in, entirely filled in, or with a little design... maybe an apron? In the end, I gave her tiny french knots to mimic the round flowers from the meadow.
For a one who's only an inch and a quarter tall, she certainly gave me much to think about! But I think she turned out all right in the end. In fact, I'm quite happy with the whole project-- it turned out just as I had in mind.
And Did You See...?
